Buck 65 / Tahiti 80 / Holy Fuck - Live@ Barfly, London
By Lisa Holmes

The noise coming from upstairs at the Barfly is tremendous, early arrivals get to catch the amazing Holy Fuck, they should have their own club night, but instead these Toronto natives are the set openers, playing to a select few, wowing with their geek chic, decks, drums and guitar. Honestly you’d be forgiven for thinking you had walked in on a jamming session in some boy’s bedroom. They carry off the spontaneity thing well with a guest spot from Buck and a whole lot of organic electricity.

The Great Escape: Round-Up
By Jim Merrett

Still, great discoveries were there to be made. Spread a clutch of little-known acts across a small city and you have something of a lottery on your hands. There are two answers – the first, thorough research and tight scheduling. Failing this, opting for the band with the best/worst names always works. So having missed You Say Party! We Say Die! due to the abject failure of plan A, plan B kicks in and we encounter Holy Fuck.

Given that two-thirds of Brits have read The Da Vinci Code, is CD: UK finally ready for a band called Holy Fuck? Possibly not. Like YSP!WSD! they ride with a Canadian flag flapping in the breeze. There the similarities end. In their allotted half-hour, Holy Fuck manage to pull off half decent impersonations of Sonic Youth, the Chemical Brothers, Can, the Boredoms and Smashing Pumpkins at their psychedelic best, often at the same time. In a circle, with their backs to the crowd, they wire their guitars and children’s instruments up to a mixing desk to produce unearthly electronica that justifies the their name tenfold.
